In our technology-driven world of instant access and immediate gratification, it is easy to move through the day without truly noticing nature. Environmental advocates rightly call attention to climate change and its effects, but there is another kind of attention we can cultivate: the simple, reverent act of observing how creation unfolds around us.
From Sunrise to Sunset
The psalmist declares in Psalm 51, “The Lord, the God of gods, has spoken; he has called the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting.” Between sunrise and sunset, God sustains an intricate order that we can easily take for granted. The sun rises, flowers open, and birds lift their songs. Clouds gather before rain falls, nourishing the earth and the food on which we depend. Each part has its moment, and together they form a living testimony to divine care.
When nature moves in harmony, we may barely notice it. Yet harmony is not sameness. Creation is filled with distinct forms, colours, rhythms, and voices—and still, everything belongs to one magnificent whole.
Three Voices, One Song
I was reminded of this truth last summer at a sidewalk café, where I noticed three hibiscus blooms growing on the same plant. The hibiscus is my favourite flower, and I am always fascinated by the way each blossom unfurls its petals in a pattern all its own, then closes again at night. These three blooms were unmistakably unique, yet they shared the same source of life. Their beauty inspired my most recent painting, which I titled Three Voices, One Song.
The image offers a gentle lesson for us. We do not have to look alike, speak alike, or unfold in the same way to belong to God’s larger harmony. Our differences are not interruptions in the song; they are part of its richness. When our lives are rooted in the same divine love, each person can bring a distinct voice while contributing to something beautiful and whole.
Pause, Notice, Give Thanks
Today, pause long enough to notice one small act of creation: a flower opening, a bird calling, a cloud forming, or the changing light at day’s end. Let it remind you that God is present in both the grand design and the smallest detail. Then ask yourself: What unique voice have I been given, and how might I offer it in harmony with others?
Creation is always singing. May we become still enough to hear it—and courageous enough to add our own God-given voice to the song.
Christ in you, the hope of glory. That’s why glory matters.
