Lived Experience Matters: When Caregiving Shapes Purpose

Some stories are hard to share—but they matter.
Especially when they hold the power to change how we see aging, caregiving, and the systems meant to support families.

Supporting a loved one as a long‑distance caregiver profoundly reshaped my understanding of health, vulnerability, and resilience. Watching my father’s slow journey with Alzheimer’s disease was heartbreaking. The disease did not only alter his life—it transformed our entire family.

My mother devoted herself fully to his care. From another country, my sister and I witnessed both her strength and her exhaustion, often feeling the ache of distance and helplessness. Alzheimer’s is not only a diagnosis; it is a relentless presence that affects everyone who loves the person living with it.

Looking back now, I see how God used this painful season in ways I could not understand at the time. Through my father’s illness and passing, our faith was deepened. We were shaped—slowly, imperfectly—into more compassionate people, learning to trust God’s goodness even when the road felt unbearably long.

This lived experience did not end with grief. It became a turning point.

In this episode of the Aging with Dignity podcast, I share how caregiving can—and should—translate into action. Our personal stories matter not only in shaping who we become, but in shaping the people, policies, and systems that safeguard brain health, dignity, and quality of life for seniors and the families who care for them.

Lived experience matters in business—and just as much in nonprofits and charities.

In my conversation with podcast host Varsha Bhat, I reflect on how caregiving ultimately led me toward a new professional path in the nonprofit sector, focused on prevention, advocacy, and better support for vulnerable seniors. I also share how encountering the story behind Hope for Dementia—founded after Parsa Famili’s own caregiving journey—reinforced for me the power of personal experience to ignite meaningful change.

After listening, I invite you to reflect:

If you’ve navigated caregiving yourself, what support made the biggest difference for you? What was missing—and what still needs to change?

I leave you with encouragement from the prophet Habakkuk—words that carried me through seasons of uncertainty and loss:

Even though the fig trees have no blossoms,
and there are no grapes on the vines…
yet I will rejoice in the LORD!
I will be joyful in the God of my salvation.

(Habakkuk 3:17–19)

Christ in you, the hope of glory. That’s why glory matters.
