This article is an extract from my book Pastels & Prose, a collection of pastel paintings and the stories that inspired me to create them.
Deeply committed to the Christian tradition of spirituality, I define myself as an eternal, evolving spirit, having a purposeful, earthly experience.

“Lighten our darkness, we beseech Thee O Lord…” was the first line of the closing prayer I would say with my eyes closed as a child at St. Andrew Parish Church Sunday School in Jamaica. I would recite the prayer so many times and feel so comforted by the words that followed…“By Thy great mercies defend us from all the perils and dangers of the night…”
I have been amazed by the sudden moments of clarity throughout my life.
Whenever this has happened it was as if I stepped out of a cold, scary, dark shadow into a warm beam of light with my eyes wide open…and suddenly, I felt the confidence to step forward in faith.
Sunrises and sunsets are a metaphor for clarity and courage. It’s not so much the light from the sun that amazes me. It’s the effect of the rays of the setting sun on the surrounding dark spaces. There is a strange, striking and unique beauty that is mysterious, but reassuring, every time I see the sun rising and setting. This is nature’s way of reaffirming that the Universe is unfolding as it should and that all will be well.
Christ in me, the hope of glory. That’s why glory matters.
