Emancipation Day: Stepping from the past towards a better future.

“Some things are history” is an often quoted statement, intended to dismiss an unpleasant past.

This is a painting of the view of the glorious sunrise over Jack’s Hill in St. Andrew, Jamaica. My late parents would sit on the verandah of our family home, beholding the play of the sun’s rays on our meticulously tended lawn and garden, which many, many years ago, was part of the Cherry Garden Estate.

I cannot begin to imagine the joyful celebration on the Estate that heralded the sunrise on August 1, 1834. That first August morning of freedom made the heavens and the hills echo the songs of liberated voices, never to be silenced again.

On the eve of Emancipation Day while putting the finishing touches on this painting, I could think of no better name than ‘Morning Glory’ to describe the resplendent beauty of this scene.

Just like slavery, my parents and our family home have had their time in history. The daily sunrise gives birth to new perspectives on the legacy of times past and inspires hope eternal of better and brighter times to come.

Now the slave does not remain in a household forever; the son of the master does not remain forever. So if the Son makes you free, then you are unquestionably free.

John 8:35-36

Enabling businesses and people to be successful. This is my mission, my life’s work. It’s always been what I have done wherever I’ve been employed, called to serve or to volunteer. An experienced business leader, my core values are truth, integrity, and respect. I believe that values-based leadership is critical for organizational success that is enabled by an engaged and empowered workforce. Working over the years in several senior marketing, communications, and executive leadership mandates for global, financial, healthcare, and non-profit organizations, it has been through times of transformation and difficult change that I have done my best work. In my blog posts, I share my perspectives on leadership, marketing and strategy that are based on my key learnings and observations over the years, all with the objective of helping others reach for success. In my spare time, I enjoy the beauty of nature which I reproduce in my pastel paintings.
